How does Invisalign® Clear Aligners Work?

To straighten your teeth, Invisalign® uses comfortable, custom-created clear aligner trays. Each series of custom aligners are used approximately every one or two weeks before moving onto the next aligner to gradually, and continually move your teeth into the desired position comfortably and conveniently.  With each tray, your teeth will move approximately  1/10mm each time.

Since aligners are not attached to the teeth, we use little pressure points called attachments that are tooth-color bumps bonded to your teeth during your treatment.  The placement and shapes of each attachment are strategically placed, as it will depend on the movement that is required to get the desired results.  If your teeth do not fit ideally with the aligners, minor reshaping or resizing is typically painless. Your dentist or orthodontist will ask you to come back to the office for check-ups on a regular basis so they can ensure you’re getting the best results possible.

For the best results, it is highly recommend the clear aligners be worn for 22 hours each day, including when you sleep.  The only time you would normally remove the aligners is to eat, and to brush and floss your teeth.

How is the Invisalign® Than Traditional Braces?

Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are…

  • Better for your health.  Patients with traditional braces will tell you that food is your worst nightmare. You’ll find spots and stains on your teeth from the food you eat after the braces come off, but with aligners, you can easily remove them for brushing, flossing, or special occasions.
  • Discreet and essentially invisible.  Most people won’t even notice you’re wearing aligners.
  • Comfortable to wear with no sharp metal or wires.
  • No food restrictions.

What are the health benefits to straighter teeth?

There are many health benefits to getting a straighter smile if you have…

Crowding – When your teeth are too crowded together, they’re difficult to brush and floss properly. When the area is not cleaned properly, you’re more at risk for cavities.
Spacing –  With extra space between your teeth, sometimes food can get stuck in the little gaps, increasing your risk for cavities, tooth decay, and bad breath.
Bite Alignment – When your bite isn’t in perfect alignment, you may grind or clench your teeth. This can wear down your teeth and cause pain and headaches. In severe cases where it is left untreated, it can eventually cause TMJ issues.

FAQ - Invisalign

Who is a good candidate for invisalign?

Short term orthodontics is a a great solution for both adults and teens who want a better smile but don’t want the long commitment to traditional metal braces.  Dr. Feng can determine whether you are a good candidate for Invisalign® by conducting a thorough examination of your mouth.  Invisalign can address most common teeth-straightening and bite issues.

How long does Invisalign take?

Traditional, fixed-bracket orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from eighteen to thirty-six months.  The innovation of Invisalign drastically reduces traditional treatment times from eighteen to thirty-six months down to twelve to eighteen months.  Note that length of time usually depends on the treatment needed.

Will I need to wear a retainer when treatment is finished?

Yes, in order to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original positions, a retainer must be worn each night once your Invisalign treatment is completed.

How do I care for my Smile while I have clear aligners?

Caring for your smile during Invisalign trays has never been easier! Simply remove your alignment trays and clean using a soft bristled toothbrush each morning and night.  You would also brush and floss your teeth as you normally do to ensure you remove any plaque buildup.  We also recommend an anti-bacterial rinse in between meals. This will help preserve your oral health during your Invisalign treatment.

ARE INVISALIGN Clear ALIGNERS PAINFUL

There will be some pressure and discomfort when you first put on your clear aligners.  The discomfort typically lessens in a couple of days after each new set of trays.   This is totally normal and a sign that your teeth are moving as they should, shifting into their final position that was carefully planned out by Dr. Feng.

What is the cost of Invisalign treatment?

As with any orthodontic treatment, the cost of Invisalign depends on several factors – the length of treatment, the complexity of your case, and how many aligners you’ll need. Depending on your dental insurance, it can help lower the amount you pay out of pocket.  If you don’t have insurance, we can help you get 0% financing with Lending Point or CareCredit.
