Types of Dental Ssedationon

At Sloan Creek Dental, we’ve centered our care around providing a positive experience at the dentist where you may safely get the care you need. Our Fairview dental office conveniently offer 3 methods of sedation depending on your level of apprehension including nitrous oxide sedation, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. In addition to sedation options, Dr. Feng’s gentle approach and advanced treatments ensure you can receive comforatble care no matter the treatment you’re receiving. We want you to feel confident, comfortable, and stress free while you’re receiving the best dental experience at Sloan Creek Dental.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Commonly known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled through a nasal mask to help you relax and feel calm and content. Nitrous oxide is the safest and most convenient form of sedation because the gas takes just a few minutes to set in and leaves your system quickly once the treatment is over. Most patients on nitrous oxide will feel a deep sense of relaxation and stay awake during the entire procedure, but some people may fall asleep. Almost anyone can use nitrous oxide to help them feel more comfortable during dental treatments, and you can go on with your day as normal immediately after you leave the dental office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation may be a good option for people who are slightly more anxious and require greater levels of sedation than nitrous oxide to feel fully relaxed. Oral sedation involves taking an anti-anxiety pill that will make you feel drowsy during treatment. Many patients who use oral sedation report not remembering what happened during their dental procedure. The drowsiness will settle in about an hour after you take the pill and may last for several hours. This means you will need someone to drive you home.

IV Sedation

If you have moderate to severe dental anxiety, then IV sedation (intravenous sedation) may be the best option for you. A benefit of this method is that we can use anesthesia in a way that’s tailored to you and your needs. We’ll be able to adjust your sedation level during a procedure, so you’ll always feel comfortable.

With IV sedation, medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream, and it only takes a couple of minutes to start feeling sedated. Patients typically report feeling like they slept through the entire procedure. Like with oral conscious sedation, you will need a designated driver to take you home because you may continue to feel sleepy and groggy after the treatment.

What to Expect at Your Dental Visit

Before treatment begins, our team makes certain you are resting comfortably and ready to move forward with treatment. During treatment, most patients fall into a relaxed state but remain responsive enough to answer our questions. Throughout the process, our team monitors your blood pressure, oxygen intake, and heart rate. Once treatment is complete, a team member stays with you until you are alert and ready to go home with a companion. As mentioned previously, a companion is not needed for nitrous oxide “laughing gas”.

When Can You Use Sedation Dentistry?

During your new patient exam and dental consultation, we’ll review your medical history to determine if there are any factors that would contraindicate the use of nitrous oxide, taking any oral conscious sedation, or IV sedation. If there are none, and sedation is appropriate for you, sedation can be used with any treatment you feel nervous about. We’ll review your options and discuss what the treatment will be like with sedation. If you’re nervous about treatment and want to improve your dental health, talk to us, as our goal is to make you feel completely confident and comfortable during, before, and after your treatment.

FAQ - Sedation Dentistry Services

Sedation can be useful for people who are anxious about visiting the dentist. If you have a strong gag reflex, your dentist can offer sedation to help ensure that you stay comfortable during your treatment. Sedation can also help patients who need a lot of dental work done in a single visit. Doing so can help the patient remain calm and free of pain during any procedure.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide as a safe sedation method for children, who often experience less anxiety and feel less pain when administered the gas. Your dentist at Sloan Creek Dental can use it to help kids get fillings, crowns or extractions with less fear.

You will never be alone during dental treatment. The anesthesiologist, dentist, and/or hygienist will be in the room with you to monitor your comfort and safety.
