Dental Crown Treatment - McKinney, TX

Metal free ceramic dental crowns

Dental crowns are commonly referred to as “caps,” where the dental crown surrounds the visible portion of the entire tooth. They are typically used when natural teeth are damaged by tooth decay or trauma. Because the crown encases the tooth entirely, this method is highly reliable as it protects and strengthens your tooth so that you can function and chew without worry. At Sloan Creek Dental, we use metal-free crowns for your dental care that are both durable and natural-looking so you can smile confidently.

What are the reasons why I may need a dental crown?

Your smile may benefit from a dental crown if a tooth is damaged or decayed to the point that a dental filling will not provide a successful restoration. Dental crowns are less invasive, preserve the natural tooth structure, and require much less recovery time than dental implants because the tooth does not have to be extracted. Most commonly, dental crowns are used to correct the following dental scenarios for a healthy smile:

  • To serve as a prosthetic tooth for a dental implant
  • Long-lasting correction of major dental issues
  • Anchor and attach a dental bridge
  • Fractured/broken teeth
  • Chipped/cracked teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Restore a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Protection over large fillings
  • Repair teeth that may have become too broken or decayed to be fixed with a filling
  • To build up a small or worn down tooth such as a misshapen tooth
  • Decayed tooth

Porcelain Crowns

At Sloan Creek Dental, we use porcelain crowns as they are the most popular crown used nowadays due to the durability of the material compared to other crowns. Some advantages of using porcelain crowns are:

  • Your porcelain crown will provide the best and most natural appearance as they match your surrounding natural teeth in shape, size, and color.
  • The best option for front teeth restorations.
  • They are biocompatible, which means they will be toxic-free as no metal will be used.

What is the process for a dental crown placement?

Dental crown placement is a two-step process that involves two visits to our office. On the first visit, a local anesthetic will be given before this part of the procedure so you won’t feel any discomfort. The dentist will clean and remove any tooth decay and shape the tooth’s surface to fit the crown properly. Once these details are complete, a impression (mold) will be taken of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental laboratory where they will fabricate a new crown where the tooth color will be matched to the natural shade of your other teeth.

While the crown is being crafted, this time we’ll fit you a temporary restoration, so the tooth is not exposed. Once your permanent crown is ready, you will come back to the office where we will remove your temporary crown, the tooth will be cleaned before placing the permanent crown onto the tooth, and the dentist will ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

Common questions

Your crown should be treated just like your natural tooth. With proper care such as brushing and flossing regularly, going to the dentist for general check-ups and cleanings, your crown will last for a very long time.

Crowns are used to protect and strengthen your tooth due to trauma or decay. Unlike a crown that covers the entire tooth, a dental veneer is bonded only to the front of the tooth. Veneers offer a more conservative option to transform the appearance of your teeth while looking and feeling just like your natural tooth. Veneers can be used to change the tooth’s shape, size, or color of teeth so that you can have a smile you have always dreamed of. Both options provide a natural look for a beautiful smile.

The average lifespan for a dental crown is about 15 years, provided that a person takes good care of their crown. When a person cares for their crown properly, it is common to see them last upwards of 20 or more years.

Had to find a Dentist in a hurry. I had a crown come off that needed to be replaced and cemented so I could eat. They were close and extremely accommodating. Very pleased and made a future appointment.
